Hey again!
Today was all about spelunking in Cedar city. The little old part of town is pretty cute-lots of interesting shops and a great Western Museum-dedicated to the iron ore
production that actually led the city to be founded. Anyone who has seen a lot of old western movies and has wondered "where did all of those old wagons go?"-well, we found them at the museum! several acres worth, at least-every make and model to be sure! This town is really friendly. We saw a beautiful stone church, the Cedar City Tabernacle-just beautiful-founded in 1850 when the iron ore was discovered and the town was started. Mormon leader Brigham Young called for volunteers to colonize the Cedar City area in Dec, of 1850. Ten months later, the colony completed a blast furnace and began operating an iron foundry. even though the foundry was quite successful,it only operated for eight years-then was shut down. so now you know something about the history of Cedar City-in case you ever wondered!
The city is really quite pretty, with the beautiful snow capped mountains in the background-flowering fruit trees everywhere-we are enjoying our stay here. I can imagine how beautiful it must be in the fall and winter months also.
Tomorrow we hike in Kolob Canyon-we just are going to have to get ginger some walking boots soon!
